Traditional Mas characters in Trinidad and Tobago are steeped in history. The tradition of our portrayal is a kind of ciphered storytelling. On the surface there is a lot of beauty to behold but so many stories unfold the deeper we interrogate them.

Many indigenous traditions have been lost through globalization. In Trinidad and Tobago, a few artists are trying to preserve the essence Traditional Mas in their own way by creating contemporary versions in order to gain relevance in youth culture.

In Trinidad and Tobago we have an annual festival called Carnival that combines music with the portrayal of characters we call ‘Mas’. This is a contemporary combination of ‘Sailor Mas’ and Adidas.
