For example, it could make him very ambitious and constantly striving to improve, so he can disprove the people who thought he was worthless, or maybe he’s quick to act when other people are ostracized.

For a lot of my characters, I don't really give them reasons. Normally, they just go along with the party just cause. In particular for this character and his brothers, they came from a different universe. And main plot is them either getting back to their universe or making a life in the new universe.
