Can I write a book about Japanese mythology?

I did a minor in Japanese during my undergrad, and during my independent study, I researched a particular part of Japanese mythology and history during the Heian period that I found incredibly interesting and got inspired to write a fictional adaptation on it. I now worry that being an American with no ethnic ties to Japan, I could get hate for publishing my book. I love a lot of mythology-based novels that I've read, but I feel like all of them were written by people from that ethnicity or country. Opinion on this?
