2018 Baumard Quarts de Chaume
Maybe this is a case of encountering a legend too early in my Loire drinking experience or maybe it’s a cautionary tale of drinking a historied wine too early…
It’s well made wine, that is not in question. But as is, it feels a tad hollow. The nose is rather quiet and the finish a bit simple. I get the sense that it would’ve benefited from age to bring out more nutty characteristics alongside the fruit.
Nose- lots of candied green apple and pear, some light maple syrup, and pickled ginger
Palate- loaded with honey and pear. Wonderfully balanced with high acidity and sugar leading to a viscous texture. Great sustain but lacking in flavor diversity.
Finish- More honey. A touch of almond and cantaloupe. Without the sweetness this would end too quickly.
What’s the most recent wine that you opened too early?
