Wildcard Priority - October 2024
Hey all! Welcome back to another edition of Best Wildcard! Where I go through all the choices for wildcard slots. Before I get to the individual rankings, let's talk about the reason you're all here this month: Ysera.
Ysera
First of all, shoutout to u/pdrayton, who informed me that the bottom 3 slots were datamined as: Unbound Tank Fast Flying Spell Ranged Squad. So we can really get into this.
This means that Ysera can buff any unit, without wildcard. It also means you can put basically any card you want in the Boost Slot.
That leaves the question of how useful is that cycle slot. For that, we'll want to think about we will use Ysera for.
My guild and I were talking about it, and from what we can see, in addition to heroics Ysera has at least four use cases (which is quite good by the way):
- Baron Geddon, 2) Golemagg, 3) Ragnaros, and 4) PvP
Baron Geddon's fight is all about economy, flyers, and crowd control. Though poison can help a little as well, but it's less a priority here. Ysera is all about that so she's quite a good fit, though time will tell whether she can compete with Rend. Still, I'm going to try this out myself once I get her deck upgraded through dungeon runs.
For Baron Geddon though you will want to use Dark Iron Miner, so wildcard doesn't do much for you there. If you want two spells then you need wildcard for that, though, so that's something to consider.
While I'm at it, I suspect either double chance of Ysera cards, or map-wide hibernate will be the preferred talent for Baron. Think about it: How many of your baron matches are losses due to getting overwhelmed by fire elementals? I think Ysera will help a lot with that.
Golemagg is where it gets interesting, in my opinion. Again you want flyers, but here it's more about poison, as it's chimera's poison stacks doing a lot of the work here. We don't really want any ground unit, just spells and flyers. So, for cycle flyers we're down to Gryphon, Batrider, and Vultures. Grphon and Batrider aren't bad, but I think there's a strong argument to be made here for the wildcard, especially as you very likely may want multiple spells (I use three fliers 3 spells in my Charlga deck and that works extremely well, though 4 and 2 might be good too). Additionally, you likely will want the double poison talent here. So if you're strongly considering using Ysera against Golemagg, then I'd say this should be a fairly high priority, though you can use gryphon or batrider in the meantime if you've used your wildcard slot for the month already.
Ragnaros these days seems to end up with one player on offense and one on defense most of the time. I think Ysera is a strong choice for defense. Here it would make sense to slot in bandits or dark iron miner, though you may want those in one of the cenarion slots instead. Interestingly, Old Guardian recently showed off a strategy using Arcane Blast, which is a cycle spell, so that's a consideration for the cycle slot as well. The two reasons I'm curious about Ysera here are innervate and hibernate, though the whelps and drake might be quite useful against molten giants and core hounds. But, I might even use map wide sleep talent here, as slowing down the guys on the left hand side by 6 to 9 seconds, while providing opportunity for my ally to gain an advantage on his push, sounds really enticing. Overall, I don't think wildcard is as important here, but I'd need to see it in practice first.
For PVP, it's harder to say, but you may want to put miner or bandits in the cenarion slots, so I think Wildcard is a bit more enticing here.
Overall, I think Ysera is above Cenarius for best Cenarion leader for Wildcard, especially if you're going to use her against Golemagg, though she doesn't have any particularly glaring gaps that Wildcard will be filling.
Alliance
Leader | Replaced Slot | Minis You Can't Buff Without Wildcard | Strategic Implications |
---|---|---|---|
Maiev | Unbound | Firehammer Pyromancer Flamewaker Boomkin Ogre Mage Frostwolf Shaman Darkspear Troll Necromancer Banshee | Banshee is the only particular stand out, but Maive usually plays with a low mana curve and loves her unbounds so this isn't very important. Maive usually isn't used against Rag, and isn't good against Geddon, so it'd only be heroics where you might want a higher level Banshee. |
Tirion | Tank | None! | Tirion is an excellent tank himself so the extra tank slot isn't as valuable as it otherwise would be, nevertheless, quilboar, harvest golem, and ancient of war slots nicely into it. So it's not terrible. |
Jaina | Spell | Darkspear Troll Banshee Dryad | Jaina can help you cheese a lot of PvE encounters, and banshee helps with that. She's also great in PvP, and the flexibility to put your spell in the boost slot and put something else in wildcard slot is useful. Lastly, Jaina needs strong defensive cards more than others, so Banshee helps her a lot. |
Horde
Leader | Replaced Slot | Minis You Can't Buff Without Wildcard | Strategic Implications |
---|---|---|---|
Cairne | Ranged | Harvest Golem Worgen Gnoll Brute Bog Lord Ancient of War Abomination | The two horde slots are likely to go to ranged units, so the ranged slot may not be as useful. Additionally, harvest golem and Ancient of War can be nice in PvP. |
Sneed | Siege | Harvest Golem Gnoll Brute Fire Ele Bog Lord Ancient of War Abomination | The second siege slot often is redundant in Sneed. However, if you're only using Sneed for Ragnaros, then you you may want Gargoyle, but you might want that in the boost slot instead. Being able to buff Fire Ele for dungeons is nice, but Sneed is great with leeching poison by himself anyways. Ancient of War is Good in PvP though. So all in all a pretty great choice for wildcard. |
Grom | Squad | Harvest Golem Gnoll Brute Molten Giant Fire Ele Bog Lord Ancient of War Abomination | Squad isn't very valuable, and being able to have a better tank such as Harvest Golem or Fire Elemental in front of Grom is really nice. Also Ancient of War can be good in PvP. |
Blackrock
Leader | Replaced Slot | Minis You Can't Buff Without Wildcard | Strategic Implications |
---|---|---|---|
General Drak | Elemental | Harvest Golem Mountaineer Footmen Gnoll Brute Bog Lord Ancient of War Stonehoof Tauren Warsong Grunts Abomination | You don't need a second non-unbound, non-blackrock tank with Drak, and you'll want to slam shaman into this slot. So wildcard doesn't do much for you. Maybe Ancient of War or Harvest Golem in PvP. |
Rend | Flying | Polymorph Execute Cheat Death | Execute and polymorph are extremely useful in both PvE and PvP, and 3 levels goes a long ways. |
Emperor Thaurissan | Melee | None! | Arguably flying and ranged are more useful than melee in an Emperor deck. |
Ragnaros | Armored | Defias Bandits Polymorph Execute Cheat Death | Those are some very useful minis, especially in PvP, which is where you'll use Rag anyways. |
Beast
Leader | Replaced Slot | Minis You Can't Buff Without Wildcard | Strategic Implications |
---|---|---|---|
Charlga | Fast | None! | Five of the nine fast units in the game are beast units and can go in the beast slots instead. Additionally, Charlga is used for Golemagg and doesn't need the fast slot for that as harpies get taken out quick. So a fast slot isn't that great in either PvP or PvE. |
Hogger | Cycle | Harvest Golem Gnoll Brute Fire Ele Bog Lord Ancient of War Abomination | You may want fire elemental for dungeons with Hogger, and AoW and Harvest Golem are good for PvP. |
Murk-Eye | Tank | Darkspear Troll Banshee | Banshee can help with a lot of heroics and Raid. |
Undead
Leader | Replaced Slot | Minis You Can't Buff Without Wildcard | Strategic Implications |
---|---|---|---|
Baron Rivendare | Unbound | Harvest Golem Gnoll Brute Bog Lord Ancient of War Stonehoof Tauren Darkspear Troll | You may want Harvest Golem or Ancient of War in PvP. |
Thalnos | Spell | Darkspear Troll | Similar logic to Jaina in terms of wildcard giving flexibility, but banshee is undead so you're good there. |
Sylvanas | Horde | Firehammer Pyromancer Flamewaker Moonkin | Moonkin is a notable addition to the minis she can't buff, but isn't seeing a lot of play. |
Cenarion
Leader | Replaced Slot | Minis You Can't Buff Without Wildcard | Strategic Implications |
---|---|---|---|
Cenarius | Tank | None! | Cenarius' leader ability is cenarion units get +20% HP as empty HP. The cenarion roster is fairly limited at the moment it's likely that one or even both of your cenarion slots will go to tanks (Bog Lord and Ancient of War). This is still an okay spot for quilboar, but overall you'll likely want to replace it sooner or later to make the most of Cenarius' ability. |
Onu | Ranged | Worgen | The bottom three deck slots of Onu can't directly buff ranged, elemental, or Unbound, meaning they can't buff banshee, SAFE, or pyromancer. You're likely going to want one of those, and any of them can be buffed by the top right ranged slot. Meaning that wildcard here gets you almost nothing at all, unless you really REALLY want to buff Worgen. |
Ysera | Cycle | None! | If you're using Ysera against Golemagg you may want to buff a second spell, and the cycle options mostly come down to Gryphon or Batrider, which is okay, but you likely can find something more useful. Against Geddon, Ragnaros, PvP and Heroics, it's a bit harder to say. Cycle is a useful slot but it's not essential. |
