What's it like to play on a Steam Deck?

I'm mainly a console player, but lately I have been wanting to get my hands on a Steam Deck, and I want to know how different it is from other consoles and other PCs. Does it perform well? What are the pros and cons of it? And more importantly, what should I really expect from it?
