Has anyone had a positive solo safari experience?
I am currently living between Cape Town and Europe and have been traveling solo for many years. I’m thinking of spending 10ish days between Zimbabwe and Botswana end of Aug / early Sept, and would love to do safari. However, in all of my very extensive research on safari options, everything - with the exception of one company (which doesn’t look great) - seems catered to two groups: retirees and honeymooners (and maybe some families). I don’t fit into any of those. And not only do they cater to those groups, they charge extra if you are traveling solo.
So I’m curious if anyone has ventured out on safari alone and what your experience was like. Did you make friends? Where did you go? It seems wild to me that given just how many nomad-style experiences are created specifically for solo travelers across regions and activities, this seems to be a blind spot. (A business opp I guess.) Safari is often regarded as one of the most epic travel experiences, so it seems sad to make it desirable only for couples and older people. I welcome your thoughts on why this is (possibly because it’s pricey - but other expensive stuff has solo options) and would love to hear if anyone has found a work-around. (I tried to post this question before and it was deleted - hoping that doesn’t happen again because I think it’s a worthy discussion and not one I’m finding elsewhere.) Appreciate your thoughts.
