Is this a deal breaker?
A local business owner recently reached out to me about doing some design work for his company. We had an informal phone conversation, and I told him I’d send over a demo of my work via email. After receiving it, he said he was really impressed and wanted to get to know me better. He even mentioned liking my voice and asked for a photo of me.
I sent him some background info about myself along with a professional business photo. His response was odd—he said he’d already seen that photo and asked if I could send another one. That immediately raised a red flag for me. I responded, explaining that this was my business headshot and suggested we set up a Zoom call to discuss things in "real time." I even provided a link to my calendar to make it easy for him to book.
Instead of scheduling a call, he replied with, “It’s a simple task,” and repeated his request for another photo. I asked him what was wrong with the one I’d sent, and he said he wanted a “better” photo. At that point, I decided to turn it around and asked for a photo of him instead. He sent a selfie with sunglasses on, so I replied with a lighthearted comment, asking for a better photo with a laughing emoji. He responded with an image of some kind of face icon.
Throughout all of this, he still hadn’t booked a meeting or shown any genuine interest in discussing business. It became clear he was acting unprofessional and creepy. As a solo, woman-owned business, this kind of behavior is a dealbreaker for me. I don’t play games when it comes to my business.
What do you think about this situation?
