I cannot understand taxes. My refund was supposed to be $1800 from federal and I owed $80 to state. Then, I added my wife's w2 and now we owe $1000 to federal and $800 to state.

How can this at all be possible? This feels like I am being scammed. Every year I pay an ass ton in taxes, yet somehow I always still owe more. I finally thought I was going to be getting something back (desperately needed btw). But now, I somehow owe that amount? I can't pay this. I am so close to doing something stupid and desperate. I have no other choice. Someone please tell me what is going on here...
