Moore’s Narrative

In her speech today, Demi Moore described recognition for The Substance as an “elixir” to heal the very issues the film is talking about. In so doing, she’s explicitly connected giving her an Oscar to taking a stand against beauty standards, ageism, objectification of women in the media, etc., etc.

She’s playing to win with the speeches and constructing and controlling her narrative before our very eyes.

Precursor awards are not a mathematical equation or rock paper scissors. Fernanda Torres can absolutely still take the Oscar even without a chance to stack precursor wins. What does hurt her is the lack of the kind of visibility and publicity Demi is getting.

I’m starting to think if Demi wins an industry prize and gets even one more chance to take the stage, which the momentum of the season suggests is overwhelmingly likely, she will be bulletproof. I’m Still Here’s nomination overperformance in and of itself would be the win for Torres and Brazil.
