IV insertion tips?

Hi everyone, I’m a 3rd year nursing student and I am heading into a L&D unit for my next clinical rotation.

It is finally within our scope of practice to insert IVs, and despite all the practice we have gotten on dummy’s/fake arms I am so scared to do it on an actual patient. These patients are going to be very vulnerable and I’m assuming in quite a bit of pain as they’re about to give birth and I just want to go in feeling as though I have some tips up my sleeve to try and make my first couple insertions as easy as possible.

I’ve seen a few nurses do them in my previous years of school but a lot of the tips they gave me were things I could get in trouble for (ripping the finger off of one glove, just shooting it in as fast as possible), and while these worked for them, again I could get in trouble and I also don’t want to hurt anyone!
