First songs on Broadway to feature various swear words
Apropos of nothing, I'm somewhat curious what the first Broadway songs to feature various common swear words were.
Note that swearing in monologues or in songs from non-Broadway shows doesn't count! AFAIU Broadway songs were particularly restricted as they were normally recorded on cast albums and then distributed. Sondheim famously wanted to end West Side Story's "Gee, Officer Krupke" with "fuck you!" but had to change it to "Krup you!" (and similarly had to use "when the spit hits the fan" in the "Jet Song").
Here's what I've come up with so far:
Piss — "Ain't Got No (Reprise)" (Hair, 1968)
Ain't got no clothes
- You're full of puss
Ain't got no pad
- You're full of piss
Shit — "The Barber and His Wife" (Sweeney Todd, 1979)
There's a hole in the world
Like a great black pit
And it's filled with people
Who are filled with shit
Update: "Greased Lightning" (Grease, 1972) is earlier (thanks /u/AngelDelighted)
With a four speed on the floor
They'll be waiting at the door
You know that ain't no shit,
We'll be getting lots of tit
Update #2: "I'm Black / Ain't Got No" (Hair, 1968) is even earlier
Ain't got no smokes (Shit)
Ain't got no job (Lazy)
Ain't got no work
Ain't got no coins
Fuck — "A Day in Falsettoland" (Falsettos, 1992)
You save lives
And I save chicken fat
I can't fucking deal with that!
("Another National Anthem" (Assassins, 1990) is earlier but was Off-Broadway.)
Update: "Planet Shmanet Janet" (Rocky Horror Show, 1975) is earlier (thanks /u/NyanyaCutieKitty)
The transducer will seduce ya
It's something you'll get used to
A mental mind fuck can be nice
You better wise up, Janet Weiss
Update #2: "Abie Baby" (Hair, 1968) is even earlier (thanks /u/InstantMartian84)
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Emanci-mother-fuckin'-pator of the slaves
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Emanci-mother-fuckin'-pator of the slaves
Cunt — "Hasa Diga Eebowai" (Book of Mormon, 2011)
When God fucks you in the butt-
- Hasa Diga Eebowai!
Fuck him right back in his cunt!
