Can we talk about “Wild Wild Country”?
Ok. So I just finished the series. Found it to be extremely compelling. I’m really into anything relating to cults, so obviously I really enjoyed it. That being said, (and I might catch some shit for this) but I kind of sympathized with the cult as some points. I’m not exactly sure if their beliefs, but it didn’t seem like it was harming anyone. It didn’t seem like the followers were giving up money for nothing. They bought that 60k acre ranch and seemingly kept to themselves. Yes, the members in the doc come off as delusional, but whatever, they kept to themselves and were like actually actively recruiting people (to my knowledge).
I don’t think all the crimes or the harassment would have transpired if the Nike guy (and the town members) didn’t try to kick them out of town. Trying to kick them out is basically what kickstarted all the negative stuff they did. Sure, a lot of the stuff that they (sheela and the higher ups) did was pretty disgusting: sedating homeless, poisoning town etc), But I feel like the majority of the followers had good intentions and were not involved. Overall, the public, law enforcement and the government were the ones that “provoked them” and then when they responded they return to the “crazy cult” narrative.
Anyway, I loved the doc. Would love to find out some more information, but I felt like the doc told an honest story.
