Are Oirats Mongols?

I've recently had a discussion with someone who claimed that Oirats (particularily Dzungarians) are Mongolian-speaking but not Mongols by arguing that they historically didn't consider themselves as Mongols and that Mongols didn't consider them to be Mongols either.

Wikipedia on the other hand claims that they are Mongols in their article about Oirats, but in their article about Mongols it says that they are either classified as distinct or as a subgroup of Mongols.

This map on German Wikipedia claims that Oirat is a seperate language from Mongolian but is a subgroup of the Mongolic languages it also claims Kalmyk is a seperate language despite Kalmyks being Oirats

TDLR: I am a bit confused
