Help in replicating

Hello, i have the intent of making a map of the former yugoslavia in 1990 with topographic, hydrographic, logistic and political information replicating the style above, but i have no idea how to start. I think i might have started off with a big project all at once, seeing as i don't even know where to get all this data for this time period
