Unapproved Apartment Maintenance: Landlord Removed Kitchen Cabinet and Items Without Notice
Hi everyone,
I live in North York, ON and need some advice regarding a concerning situation with my landlord's maintenance practices, and I'm hoping someone here can offer some insight.
My brother and I were out of the country for a short trip, and during our absence, our landlord decided to perform maintenance in our apartment unit. However, here's the issue: they did so without any prior communication or consent from us.
When we returned home, we were shocked to find that a kitchen cabinet had been completely removed, along with all the items stored inside it. To make matters worse, there was only a 24-hour notice left behind in our unit, which we didn't even see until after the maintenance had been completed.
Needless to say, we feel violated and disrespected by this blatant disregard for our privacy and property. It's one thing for maintenance to be performed, but it's an entirely different matter to enter our home without permission and remove our personal belongings. The entire apartment was covered in dust when we returned.
We understand that landlords have a responsibility to maintain their properties, but shouldn't there be some level of communication and consent involved, especially when it comes to major alterations like removing kitchen fixtures?
Has anyone else experienced something similar? What are our rights in this situation, and what steps should we take to address it with our landlord?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
