Super didn't ruin Vegeta

A debate I've seen in the community is if Vegeta continuing his rivalry with Goku in Super contradicts his "you're number 1" speech during the fight with Kid Buu. That if his character was consistent with Z he wouldn't care about surpassing Goku, he'd be more akin to GT Vegeta whom for most of that series doesn't seem to care about getting stronger or keeping up with Goku.

Now I could bring up the reprinted panel at the end of the og manga of Vegeta vowing to surpass Goku, but people quibble about it altering the original print and retconning it(even though since it was approved by Toriyama himself and thus is a cannon recton). So instead I'll just take a more general approach looking at Vegeta's character.

In both the manga and anime it's clear that the reason why Vegeta thinks Goku is number 1 is not just that he's strong(especially since at least in the manga there were several characters that were stronger than Goku at that point), but HOW Goku does it. Unlike Vegeta who harmed many people to get what he wanted Goku only sought to push his limits, not for a need fir dominance like most other Saiyans but just cause he enjoyed fighting.

"I fought to push down other's, you only fight to push yourself." This sums up Vegeta's revelation, he came to realize his approach to power was what held him back, and that Goku's way was the better way.

And we see this in Super, while Vegeta still wants to be stronger than Goku he's no longer willing to push others down to do it. His remorse in the Moro arc over what he did to the Namekians shows that he is a different person.

Also the nature of his relationship with Goku has changed. Z Vegeta had an unhealthy obsession with surpassing Goku that was fuled by jealousy, rage, and hatred. Now their rivalry is more like a friendly competition, while they want to surpass each other it's not filed by hatred on either side.

Overall I think Vegeta's characterization In Super matches up fine with Z Vegeta's arc. Personally, I prefer Vegeta continuing to train and fight with a better mindset than just quitting and doing nothing.
