donepezil prescribed for early dementia symptoms

My mom (78) was taken to a Drs appt yesterday by my cousin to discuss possible early dementia signs and mini-stroke. I am in the UK and my mom in the US, so my cousin is helping out.

My cousin gave me the full lowdown on my mom's health and apparently two years ago this Dr put my mom on donepezil for her memory issues. But the Dr told my cousin that Alzheimers isn't usually diagnosed after 50!! Yes I know this is crazy. I know this is so wrong. But I was not there to tell her off. I would've asked to see another Dr but my mom has been with this Dr for decades.

My mom did the Moca test and it sounds like she did horribly (I don't have the score yet) but the Dr seemed that she didnt have dementia.

My question is do Drs put people on donepezil if they don't have signs of early dementia?

Sadly, my mother didn't even take the prescription, either she forgot or just didn't feel like taking it!

she may not have declined so much in the past two years if she had been taking it!
