Greirat won't leave the firelink shrine

I have freed Greirat and retrieved Loretta's bone for him, He now offers to go pillage for me, but he never actually leaves the firelink shrine.

I travel to other areas and come back but he still is sitting there, and I've read he actually disappears until a boss is killed.

Am I doing something wrong?

I haven't killed the big tree yet.
