A case for reading The Bible

So I noticed that when I search this sub for "The Bible" there's actually not a single post of someone recommending it, saying they enjoyed it/disliked it etc. For a text that has arguably had the greatest impact on the western world, I can't help but find this a bit odd.

Obviously this has to do with most people online being atheist/agnostic (I myself, if I had to label myself, would say I'm agnostic), but if you truly want to criticise religion, particularly Christianity, then it only makes sense that you would read The Bible in order to have a say. It would be like criticising a movie you never watched.

The other main point I'd like to make is that so, so many classic authors make references to The Bible, so by not reading it you miss out on a whole load of other great works of literature, like Paradise Lost, Faust, The Divine Comedy, the list goes on.

I personally think you can approach it as a historical text and/or from a literary standpoint. One doesn't have to be a Christian or have faith in order to read it. I think it's a text that's as fundamental as reading the ancient Greeks like Plato or Aristotle. It also informs you in other forms of media too because it's a book that has permeated the culture we live in, which is easy to see once you've read the book.

Curious as to everyone else's thoughts here and whether you've read The Bible or not.
