How do you develop your palette ?

Like you guys can sense all the flavors but for me the story is a little different. For sure I can taste the fruitiness of the canadian blends ie crown and the honey of the Dewars but... I just opened a bottle fo Eagle Rare and for the life of me all I can taste is decent whisky. Where are all these notes? The caramel, the black cherry all that?? Excuse me for being uneducated in this department just wanting to understand its almost like some went to bourbon sommelier academy. Where do you guys get all these notes, am i just blind to them or did you have to work to get the ability to discern these flavors ?
