Can you play mostly nogi guards in gi?
Fully aware it’s probably not an optimal strategy not to train things like double-sleeve, collar-sleeve, spider, etc. Situation is I have limited time to train, and my days are an almost even split between gi and nogi, and I prefer nogi.
When I play guard in nogi I’m playing a lot of shin/shin or butterfly moving into SLX/X with some DLR/RDLR. Obviously can’t play things like collar-sleeve in nogi, but it seems the strategy is totally different in nogi. In gi, space is usually your friend. In nogi, you have to get under your opponent. Nogi strategy seems to kinda work in gi, but gi strategy is impossible in nogi.
Does anyone think it’s smart on a limited schedule to just work my guard in gi in a similar way to nogi so I can get more practice with one guard strategy? I don’t mean not using gi grips at all, just training more guard types like butterfly/X/SLX and the overall strategy as if it’s nogi and avoid things like collar-sleeve that don’t transfer to nogi
