Group selection redundancy

I'm in a team of seven and was told we were going through a "group selection" process where one of us will be made redundant. The selection could take several weeks.

It's a horrible feeling, as a team we all get along but we are kind of pitted against each other during an uncertain period.

Perhaps management is hoping one of us volunteers. Has anyone been through this?
