Is anti-social behaviour common for everyone in the UK?

I'm an international student studying in the north of England. Considering its secluded location, there are quite a few international students because of the uni, but it’s still mostly a local population. Because of this, I sometimes feel like I stick out like a sore thumb.

I've experienced several instances of anti-social behaviour. For example, people driving by have rolled down their windows to shout things at me, scare me with loud noises, or even burp at me (must admit though, takes some skill to do a drive-by burp).

I’m not jumping to conclusions by saying these behaviours are racially motivated, though I do have my suspicions. That’s why I’d like to ask everyone, both local students who have lived here for a long time and international students who might share my perspective:

  • Is anti-social behaviour common for everyone in the UK, or do you think it's targeted at me as a foreign student?
  • How should I respond or deal with these situations?

I want to add that I genuinely love this place. Even if these incidents are rooted in racism, I understand they don’t represent everyone. I’ve met amazing people here who I’ll call friends for life, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to study in the UK.
