Advice needed for filing taxes with I-130 pending.

I filed an I-130 with consular processing for my husband last year. I saw someone say to file taxes as married filing separate, but I also saw someone say USCIS like to see married filing jointly and that you can get an ITIN number and file jointly. But how can we file jointly in a country he's never stepped foot in? I don't want to mess up my taxes and I don't want to mess up his petition. What has been everyone else's experience with this? Any advice is appreciated.
