Shift from Environmental Engineer to Surveyor (NH)

Hi all,

I am hoping to get some guidance on the steps required or recommended to become an entry-level surveyor in the state of New Hampshire as someone who possesses a degree in a related field. For context, I received a BS in Environmental Engineering in 2018 and worked as a consultant in the Wastewater Treatment field for three years. The stress of consulting and working at a computer full-time was taking a toll on my mental health, so I did a career flip and have worked as a landscaper for the past 4 years. I enjoy landscaping, but I am finding it difficult to support myself financially on a landscaper's salary. I find myself again looking for a career change, and I am hoping I can use my degree rather than go back to school and accumulate more debt. It seems like surveying might be a good balance of the outdoor work that I enjoy with better compensation/benefits.

I never took a formal course in surveying in my engineering program. However, I did practice some surveying in an internship I had one summer and enjoyed it. I also really loved AutoCAD and other design software as a student and professional, but would definitely benefit from a refresher of some kind. Does anyone have any experience with courses that you can take outside of a degree program to learn and refine skills in surveying, surveying technology, and design software?

My understanding is that I would be able to start in an entry-level position without getting another degree and without yet being licensed in New Hampshire, but I would like to spend some time this year learning the skills required to make myself a strong candidate for this career. I plan on reaching out to some local surveying firms with similar questions, but wanted to see if anyone on here had any insights first.

Thanks!
