Mohela Forbearance Letter
Given the call wait times with servicers, i figured it was best to ask it here instead. Has anyone received a forbearance letter from Mohela? I received one today and i am confused with it as i never asked or applied for a forbearance.
It is dated Sept 1st which is when the loans restarted but payments are not due till oct. I am wondering if this is the Forbearance they are talking about and if these were sent out in mass to everyone. The part that makes me question if they made a mistake on my account is the Forbearance doesn't end until 1/1/2040 as "Exceptional Discretionary Forbearance" Starting 9/1/23
I am on track for PSFL and absolutely want zero forbearances that will not count towards PSLF like the govt freeze did.
Update 9/18
Called twice about 2.5hrs in hold on the phone. The first I was disconnected when they tried to transfer me. They processed the removal but said they couldn't provide me with any kind of confirmation but said it should be okay by my first payment due date of 10/2
Update 9/29
Still shows as in forbearance and I haven't received a letter like others saying the Forbearance was removed or requested to be removed on hold again.
Update 2 9/29
Well after 2 hrs and 20 mins on hold. They found that the Forbearance removal request was cancelled as the previous employee didn't input it correctly. Why I wasn't notified no idea, why was it not reprocessed also no clue. This rep says they put it through this time the right way and I should see it in my account in 2-3 business days which is right when my payment is due. So hopefully the forbearance is removed in time to get the oct interest forgiven and payment credit for PSFL but I'm not holding my breath.
Update Explanations from DOE complaint
(wow that was fast but yet I can't get them to respond to me if they can see my BD application)
Thank you again for contacting the U.S. Department of Education's office of Federal Student Aid regarding continued forbearance of your Borrower Defense case-related loans, even though not requested in your Borrower Defense Application.
We researched your concerns and note the following:
• Your Borrower Defense case is for a school that is part
of the Sweet v Cardona Settlement
• See https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/sweet-settlement and
• https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/sweet-v-cardona-school-list.pdf
• Therefore, your loans are subject to the following conditions: Under the settlement in Sweet v. Cardona, class members are not required to make payments on their student loans while they have a pending borrower defense application or while their loans are in the process of being discharged. Although repayment is resuming for student loans in general, Sweet class members who have pending borrower defense applications, or applications that have been approved but loans that have not been fully discharged, are not obligated to resume repaying their loans. This is why your loans will remain in forbearance once the COVID 19 forbearance expires, even though it was not requested as part of your Borrower Defense Case.
We hope this information is helpful to you. We are going to close your case at this time, but if you have additional concerns you can reply to this email and we will assess those concerns.
Sincerely,
Federal Student Aid
Still not great if they deny my borrowers defense claim is it pending not approved I would lose all that time towards PSLF and Interest grows uncontrollably.
Final update... hopefully Oct 3rd Forbearance was removed just in time, loans are showing as in repayment with the due date today. Just made my first payment. Now fingers crossed I don't have any of the horror stories with them not processing the payment, charging late fees or not applying the save or PSLF credit properly. Needless to say I have 0 faith that I won't be calling again.
