Mid-Life Career Switch to PR

Hi! I'm in my mid-forties and contemplating a major career shift, which is exciting and scary. I have been working in documentaries for most of my adult life, and I love what I do. But there has been so much turmoil in the  film and tv industry over the past two years that I’m not sure this work will sustain me and my family for much longer. So I have begun thinking about what transferable skills I have and what other careers could be viable without a major pay cut or years of school. My job is basically finding compelling stories from real life events or about institutions or accomplished people. Obviously, when I’m working with a director, my job is to shape the narrative to their point of view. I also pitch ideas for how to tell a story, or what the story could be, to directors and producers. It seems like these are important aspects of PR, based on my limited understanding, so I thought it might be something to explore.

Is this type of mid/late career shift into PR even remotely possible, or is it a completely absurd idea? Is there anyone who has made similar career moves like this in or out of the industry?  And if this isn’t a ridiculous notion, does anyone have any books or other sources where I can learn a little more? I have some social contacts that work in the industry, but would like to educate myself a little more before I tap those.

Thanks for any help!
