Why is Chopper crying over Luffy being dead. Is he not up to date with the manga and know he's alive?

Kaidou claimed Luffys dead and everyone's crying? Um guys this is literally episode 1070. There's several more episodes and chapters of them being alive. Why are they so stupid and believing Kaidou.
