Mimesis as a remastered creature family
I felt PF2e Remaster was lacking in a certain kind of deceptive creature found in dungeons, so I thought I'd add one:
Mimesis [Creature Family]
The mimesis is a form of intrusion or rift between the realms of the divinities and of the physical world. Unlike a gate or other form of portal, what moves through these rifts is the essence of "realness" itself. When such a rift opens near a source of divinity, the force of the divine representation of some specific truth embodied in the physical world acts as a sort of sink, and the rift becomes a drain leading to that sink. Most mimeses are extremely small disturbances in the fabric of reality that simply result in a trivial transformation of some real object into something unreal, such as a mushroom being replaced by a red egg of a type that no bird lays.
But most travellers know mimeses as they manifest when any sort of magic being is trapped too long in their vicinity. Slowly, the creature's natural magics are twisted into a new form, resulting in a new creature which is able to change its form into anything that is misleading or beguiling to the unwary.
A mimesis creature no longer has a true form of its own, and only exists as a type of illusory object. They appear as anything that an unwary creature or traveller might place themselves inside of, in whole or (in the case of smaller mimeses) in part.
Because the underlying rift is only sustained while it transports new forms of reality through to the higher planes, mimeses that remain for long periods of time are those that successfully entrap creatures periodically. Thus there has been a long process of natural selection that has seemingly "improved" these creatures' hunting ability.
A mimesis creature can wander a significant distance from its rift, but will begin to become drained if it stays away too long.
Mimeses have the following common features:
- Mimeses are aberrations.
- Mimesis partial object immunities: Mimeses are immune to death effects, healing, disease, poison, vitality, void, as well as the doomed, drained, fatigued, paralyzed, and sickened conditions.
- Assume Object Form (concentrate, occult, polymorph) The mimesis spends 10 minutes reshaping its appearance to take on the shape of any object of its natural size category. It gains a +4 circumstance bonus to Deception checks to pass as that object, but the object cannot be one that would normally be in this location. So it could appear as a backpack in a mud pit, but not as a lump of mud. Note that there is no ability to resume the creature's "true" form, as that is lost in the process of becoming a mimesis.
- Transformation Healing The mimeses does not heal normally. Instead it only heals when it assumes a new object form. It can heal 1d6 damage, plus 1d6 per 3 creature levels, during a transformation. It cannot heal again for 24 hours.
- Mimesis Wasting The mimesis must stay near the intangible and otherwise undetectable rift that created it at least part of the time. If it spends more than day away from that rift it gains the drained condition at the start of the next day, increasing any existing drained condition by 1. If it is destroyed by this process, its body will fade from existence. Its true body does not return.
- Extract Thymoeides [one-action] Requirements A creature is restrained by the mimesis and the mimesis is within 10 feet of its rift. Effect The mimesis rift itself draws on the essence of the creature that has been restrained by the mimesis. The creature is drained 1 with a maximum drained level of half the mimesis level or 1 whichever is higher. Above level 10, mimeses also add an equal level of stupefied to the drained condition.

Drain Reality Over the course of a full day, a creature killed by the mimesis will be entirely unmade, its body disintegrating irretrievably after 24 hours.
Sneak Attack The mimesis deals 1d6 extra precision damage to off-guard creatures.
This small creature might appear as any sort of object with an opening but they appear to prefer bags, boxes, backpacks and similar sorts of containers. Unless provoked or desperate, the mimesis typically waits until an unwary traveller places a limb inside its body, at which point it begins to attack, grabbing the creature and allowing its rift to drain the creature's essence.
