Saying that poor people should not have multiple children is not eugenics
I’ve seen this come up many times on PAK subreddits. Whenever someone posts population control people comes out with pitchforks screaming about eugenics and how it’s Hitlerism to tell a poor person to not have kids. I find it interesting that this is the only time Pak awam agrees with liberal ideas.
First of all no one is entitled to a child. A child is a human being in his own right who is completely dependent on his parents. If you cannot feed or clothe him, how are you planning to raise a productive member of society? They bring up examples of rich people and state their kids will use more resources than a poor man’s kids. BUT their parents can afford to pay for those resources.
Secondly a lot of poor people in Pakistan don’t have 1 or 2 kids but more than that. These children are exploited by their parents as economic assets. The boys are put to work in workshops and girls are left at rich homes for domestic servitude. They get exploited but their parents make money off this.
You can make an argument about social welfare. And I agree that the government should provide free education, schooling and even housing to someone in need. BUT I’ve also seen cases like the UK where people have exploited the system and use children for benefits. Their parent’s entire career is built around this and mooching welfare.
Welfare states aren’t free and built by tax money. So where do we draw the line? If someone has 12 kids and are on welfare with no job. Is it still the governments job to pay this person tax payer money in benefits?
Ultimately I believe in freedom. We cannot forcefully sterilise someone. But what’s wrong with recognising the obvious that we as a country are overpopulated, lack resources and reducing the number of kids per couple might help mitigate some of our issues.
