Something to keep in mine before comparing the US with Nazi Germany

I keep seeing people compare the US with the third reich by saying things like “Hitler only took down German democracy in 53 days!” and “Trump’s using the same tactics to consolidate power!”

An important context people don’t consider before making these comparisons is that, before Hitler, Germany really didn’t have a strong history of democracy. The Weimar Republic was short lived and messy, and before that was almost a millennia of monarchy.

The US has had an unprecedented continuous streak of democracy for over 200 years now. That’s not super long when compared to other countries like China or Egypt, but that’s certainly way longer than the decade and change Germany had with pre-Nazi democracy.

We have a stronger culture of democracy here. Our institutions are stronger than strongmen and, even if they waver, Americans themselves don’t like feeling as if our rights and liberties are being trampled on. People are already starting to wake up to it. While that’s happening, stay informed, stay horrified, and stay hopeful and active in ways that make sense for you.

Edit: by 200 years, I meant the US has been around for that long. The way I phrased it made it seem like Egypt and China have been democracies longer than the US has which isn’t what I meant and was poorly worded
