Question about old window

Hi there! Just purchased a 100 year old house and have been reading through this Reddit. Question: I have two large windows with a metal flashing on the top. Just wondering before we have the house painted next year if anyone knows the reason for the flashing? Could we remove it and do something different? Thanks
