Knife throwing

You see in movies all the time people throwing a knife and have it stick in any old thing (tree, body, door, etc ..) is there some skill regarding distance or throw speed or something to do this? Like what's to stop the but end being the hit point? Is there a method to do it constantly and varying distances and not just luck?
