What first party exclusives would the Switch 2 get that the Switch 1 won’t?
My sister and I were talking about the Switch 2 and it occurred to us at some point that it would be really difficult for the Switch 2 to justify 1st party exclusives.
Think about it. If Nintendo releases a new Mario or Zelda, are they really going to withhold it from the Switch when they know the Switch 2 might only have half or two-thirds the adoptees? One parallel is how Twilight Princess and Pikmin 2 had dual releases, but this is actually more like how the Xbox 360 still got games for 2 generations, or how the PS4 continued to get new co-releases even after the PS5 started being adopted. That’s not to say the Switch 2 will fail compared to the Switch, but it probably won’t be AS adopted, keeping the Switch a major market.
What does this mean for new games? For old games, it’s a given that the Switch 2 might have AAA ports on it that the Switch 1 was simply underpowered for like Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring (?), etc.
For new co-releasing games, it’s always possible that the Switch 2 gets lesser fidelity versions of games that are releasing for Xbox and Playstation today. The Xbox 360 had GTAV look the way it did compared to everything else because it was obvious that releasing it on the 360 would reach millions of people. The Switch 2 might be powerful enough to keep up with modern releases in “medium” or “low” mode, which is exciting on its own.
But the REAL head scratcher is, what does this mean for first party releases? Will Nintendo drop the next Zelda in high fidelity on Switch 2 and medium fidelity on Switch 1? The honest conclusion we came to was…likely. Other Nintendo franchises are pretty cartoony…so then what would the Switch 2’s first party exclusives look like?
Edit: tldr There are 3 categories of Switch 2 games the Switch 1 won’t get. Old ports, new ports, and first party exclusives, in order of expected rarity.
