Daycare vs. In Home Babysitter
I have a 20 month old daughter. My husband and I both work from home M-TH, 8-3. During that time we have a babysitter who has come to stay with her downstairs in our home. Since she has transitioned from two naps to one, we are now able to let the babysitter go at 1, shortening her hours and potentially saving us some. We then complete our work day while she naps until 3.
Of course babysitter doesn't like losing hours and is looking for another position with longer hours. We live in a HCOL area, so for 4 days a week from 8-1, we pay $2,080 per month (she used to make $2,880 per month before this change) for the in home babysitter. We still make our daughter breakfast and lunch during breaks from work, and do all cleaning. Babysitter spends time with our daughter, goes on walks, teachers her another language and gives her love and attention.
I am due with our second child in a month and will have 6 months maternity leave from work. But with the no sleep newborn phase, we are assuming we'll still need help with our almost toddler during the day by then. We are trying to figure out if it's worth it to send our daughter who will be 22 months by then to a local daycare part time from 8-12:30 3-4 days per week, or look for a new in home nanny who is comfortable with 5 hours per day.
Some of the daycares here charge a blanket amount of $1700-2200 for part-time tuition (8-12:30) 5 days a week, even if we only send her in for 3 or 4. The financials end up pretty equal, with daycare seeming to be a bit on the cheaper side if we utilize it more often.
I have worries about the daycare, given that she'll only be 22 months old and will not have either parent in eyesight for 5 hours per day. We have made it work, working from home with her downstairs because we each have offices upstairs. But I want to hear from you. Do you work from home moms send your kids to daycare, or keep them in home?
And why? Please share experiences. We are at a crossroads and would love as much information as possible
