Anyone else find the yms thing a little sad?
I always found the YMS/Efap interactions to be some of the more engaging discussions, and the Efap movies with him (particularly Saw) are my favourite.
The Critical Drinker discussion with them wasn't a great idea, although I did like the conversation. Maybe Drinker is strict with who he lets on, but I think if Mauler just asked YMS to come on Open Bar or something it could've been discussed in a much more succinct way.
Having Efap defend every statement Drinker said just made it a battle of YMS vs Efap psychoanalysing CD instead of a more normal discussion.
I do genuinely believe YMS was acting in good faith, he's just an inherently pretentious and stubborn guy. Rags was unnecessarily snarky, partly because he somehow got the wrong information that YMS rated Indy 5 higher than 3 (he didn't). Fringy was okay as was Mauler but l do think them being so cynical of current film as a medium is a little silly. Especially considering Fringy defended modern gaming in the Synthetic Man stream by saying gaming currently has an exceptional indie market, the exact same thing YMS was saying about film.
Anyway, I still thought the conversation was interesting. Apparently YMS and Mauler fell out over DMS. Nothing has ever come out about it but Adam said Mauler said they weren't friends. Adam did seem upset by this to a degree and Mauler seems somewhat melancholic whenever YMS is mentioned nowadays.
This is kinda sad as they seemed on good terms in that stream. YMS offered to go to a film festival with Mauler (something he clearly views as a high honour) and Mauler offered to watch Boiling Point with Adam.
Their early discussions were always cool and you can really tell from early Efap that Mauler viewed YMS as somewhat of a role model in the YT film criticism space. It's also made YMS super cynical about mainstream films, even more so than before. He's lowered every Star Wars movie to a 1/10 on IMDB lol.
