Thinking about starting my own business.

I passed my state cert and turned out a year ago. I'm thinking about starting my own company. I have a lot of leads on commercial service work at the moment, but nothing large enough to keep more than myself busy. Would it make sense to pursue this avenue within the union? Or wait the 5 years I'm required to give back, leave the hall to grow the business, then return? I'm just not sure how to grow a business if I can't take smaller jobs first any advice would be greatly appreciated.
