OEM driver's side axle with almost 170K miles snapped coming from a stop just after getting off of the freeway (of which I'm incredibly lucky and thankful for).

I was taking a left from the freeway offramp and once I released the clutch (softly of course) and gave it a little gas, a large "poomf" shook the front end and I stopped immediately.

After a few seconds of contemplating reality, I took the left and heard a clunking sound so I pulled off onto the shoulder. I learned that it was the axle (thought it was the driveshaft) and called for a tow.

Overall it looks like it snapped where the axle shaft has a narrower segment to seat the rubber balancer piece, and judging by the rust, could have been cracked sometime prior to it fully giving in to torque.

Now I'm in the market for new axles. I know OEM is required for a normal, smooth, and long-lasting ride but after inquiring at the dealership (~$1200 for both driver and passenger axles) I was wondering if anyone has had temporary success with auto parts stores' axles, such as NAPA.

Eventually I'll be getting OEM units but I ain't got the cash and winter is coming so right now I just want to get this thing drivable again so I can commute in the snow if required. Next spring or summer I likely replace the temporary axles with OEM ones.

tl;dr what axles should i get other than oem? thx
