Trying to understand my screening results, monitoring for glaucoma
I'm a 31 yo female. I was told my right optic nerve is larger than average years ago. I was initially told that it's probably hereditary but at the time did not know that that can also be a sign of glaucoma if other criteria are also met. My dad was also told he had a large right optic nerve but later developed glaucoma. More recently I started going to a different optometrist he told me to keep going every year for check ups and is even doing field tests every year, essentially monitoring for early development of glaucoma. So far eye pressures and vision are stable (almost 20/20 vision). First field test was normal. Last year when I first started going to him he stated my right optic nerve was large (which I already knew). This year did his checks and said he doesn't know if my optic nerves are getting bigger (I think he meant as I'm getting older and not necessarily since last year) or if I was just born like this. After the visit on the summary portal he documented that I have "Suspicious optic nerve cupping of both eyes" and "asymmetry of optic nerve" but did not mention this during the actual appointment. During the appointment he did OCT Testing of retina, OCT Testing of optic nerve, checked pressures and eye dilation. I would like help understanding what the OCT of retina results mean. I tried googling it but could not get a clear answer. Right eye 102. 66. Left Eye 105. 54.
How is the severity of cupping determined?
Each practice can be a little different but I would also like to know what other questions to ask or what other testing should be getting done (if any). Also is it ok to be going to just an optometrist or when do I go to an ophthalmologist? This whole monitoring of glaucoma has me a little nervous but also know that glaucoma is manageable.
Thank you!
