Confused after education session
Hi everyone, my wife is currently 14 weeks pregnant with our second. She was tested prior to the 24 weeks, I suppose because she is hispanic and has a BMI of like 25.4, though this was never explained to us. My wife failed the 1 hour, and then in the two hour failed the blood draws at the one and two hour mark.
Our GDM education session was with a NP that works at our OBGYN office. During it she stressed testing glucose two hours after food touches the mouth, this makes sense. She stressed the fact that daily carb limit should be 150 grams. The main reason for this post is I have a couple of questions related to her advice.
- She mentioned that the calculation for total carbs is done by adding together total carbs and added sugar. I mentioned that added sugar is already part of total carbs, she said no. I asked her if fiber is counted toward totals and she said no. Explaining this is how the calculation works for pregnant woman according to ACOG. The total sugar thing seems wrong to me still but I don't know.
- Second she said that all pregnancies will have appointments with MFM, which I think should only be necessary if the sugar is not well monitored and ACOG seems to agree from what I saw online.
Would any of these things throw red flags to you? Or am I just being crazy?
I personally think we can control my wife's blood sugar and this will be a good opportunity for us to improve our eating habits. But I just wanted to check if your doctors were in line with what we learned today.
Thank you for your help
