Are there any particular reasons behind the choice of powers in the Fantastic Four?

I mean sometimes powers are the reflect of the mind or the goal of the characters.

Are there reasons that were give to theirs powers ?

Maybe Sue I can guess, she want to « protect » her family so hop……shield ?
