White Mask Varré’s purpose has changed with the context of the DLC
Given the context that the DLC gives us, Varré needs to be looked at again. He is the VERY first NPC we interact with in the Lands Between. When looking at only the context from the base game, why is the first character we meet a vassal of Mohg? In the base game, Mohg’s Dynasty is a secret, late game area that’s lore isn’t super involved with a lot of the main story.
So why Varré?
So with just the base game to go off of, we came up with some reasons. We thought he could have been the one who kills our maiden in the Chapel of Anticipation. His reasoning, I guess, would be to get another bloody finger to do the dirty work for Mohg. We eliminate the Demigods and make his ascension as Lord easier.
But with the context given from the DLC, we know for a fact that he’s at least working for a charmed Mohg. With that given, he could have also been charmed, just like Ansbach in defense of Mohg. With this info, I think it proves that Miquella is pulling the strings as soon as we step foot in the Lands Between.
To further back this point, his choice in words seem to be telling.
“Luminary Mohg has strength, vision, and of course, love.” He’s the only character to refer to Mohg as “Luminary” meaning light. This is an odd choice of words to describe Mohg, but Miquella‘s power is based in light given his incantations. Also, “love” is also never associated to Mohg by any other character, but love is Miquella’s whole shtick.
“If you mistake kindness for frailty of heart, then perhaps a more physical lesson is in order!” When attacked he says this, more of stretch but he considers his interaction with us as a “kindness”. Miquella is constantly referred to as The Kind.
So why would Miquella want Varré to interact with us? Sending us on the path forward, we gain strength and a position in the round table hold under the Two Fingers. We use the strength and utilities of the hold, to go on and take out Radahn, freeing his soul from his decaying, rotted body. Then later, we kill Mohg allowing Leda and us to use Miquella’s egg to travel to the Shadow Realm. Also, Mohgs’ body is now able to be used as the surrogate to Radahn’s soul.
To also further speculate about Miquella controlling operations of the Moghwyn Dynasty, I saw a video by a creator (forgot the name but feel free to comment if you know) that mentions the albinaurics there. Despite Miquella’s Haligtree supposedly being a place of refuge for the albinaurics, there aren’t ANY there. There is however, a ton of them all around MOHG’s palace. Plus our favorite farming spot, has the red albinaurics seemly enslaving regular albinaurics. A way to get to that location is through a sending gate in the Consecrated Snow Fields, guarded by albinaurics with gold eyes (no other albinaurics in the game have these) and doing Miquella’s ring of light incantation. I think this rather strongly implies Miquella lied to them about refuge, leading them to be used for his scheme with Mohg. With Miquella controlling this part of the operation, I would assume he is also in control of whatever Varré does.
