Starting Diablo for the new expansion

Hey guys I own Diablo already I’m sort of bored of single player games and love the online aspects of 4. I’m tempted to get the expansion and jump straight in but wondering if it’s worth it can I then go back and do previous story quests as I saw you need to unlock animal companions etc?
