Forgive abuse?

I was listening to John McAurthur’s sermon “Forgiveness in the Age of Rage”. He emphasized a lot the importance of forgiveness and towards the end he says to forgive abuse…. So what… are we supposed to be doormats and allow abusers to physically and mentally harm us? What about if there are children involved?

I come from a Hispanic family, and every Hispanic family has that one uncle that is creepy towards the nieces. But no one ever says or does anything because “he is family”. His am I supposed to forgive sexual and physical abuse and allow the same to happen to me kids? I will never let someone like that near my kids.

Does God ever advocates for the victims of physical and sexual abuse? Is it ok ( Biblically) to cut those people “family” out of our lives?
