What do I tell during confession?

So I know that I must confess sins but I have always done it in with a script, like strict sentences that you have to tell. Do I tell only sins like "there I did this and that etc." or do I give priest more background about my life? I think it would help my confessor to give me better spiritual advice. I don't know if it is a stupid question to ask.
