How do you discourage negative behaviour?
I’m planning on adopting 2 kittens soon, and have been heavily researching in order to clear away some of the confusions I have on how to raise them. One of the things I’m most concerned about is them misbehaving. For example, I would want to teach them not to jump on the counter or table surfaces. This is of course in addition to teaching against other negative behaviour, such as scratching at window screens/tv/monitor, biting wires, or destroying blinds.
I heard of clicker training already, and it sounds useful. However, could it really be used to discourage certain behaviours? Like for example, timing the click to when my kitten hops off the counter, or when they stop chewing wires. If that’s the case, should I be attempting to coax them into doing the action first in order to ensure they learn not to?
Also, I’m a little worried about how the cats might understand it. For example, do they learn “do not do -insert action-“ or do they learn “do not do -insert action- when owner is in the room”? For example, would they stop misbehaving in the morning, but then suddenly do so at night, or if I go outside for a few hours? Also, do I have to do this for every single wire, blinds, etc, or just with one in order to get the message across?
Sorry for all the questions, but I’m incredibly new to this and I’m a little nervous about accidentally raising destructive kittens. After all, leaving them unattended is much like leaving a child alone lol
