Unpopular Opinion: I like the Perfect Match
I just realized how unpopular this opinion is lol but I actually like Perfect Match. It is not a good show by any means and that fact, I believe, makes it good. I don't know if the writers and directors meant for it to be this way but it's so good. Let me explain.
We, as viewers, as so used to perfect male leads that seeing men be men is causing a whiplash. We are used to seeing the men be strong, be scholarly, be noble, be powerful, be rich, that a male lead not fitting this criteria causes a negative reaction in the viewers. Let me clarify that I am in no way, shape, or form, condoning any of the actions done by the male leads. I found it disgusting how Chai An was criticizing Fu Hui for how jealous she was. I hate how childish Fan Lianghan is and how he requires his wife and cousin to do everything for him. I also hate how selfish and hypocritical Du Yanxi is. So, don't get me wrong, I do not like these men. However, I like the portrayal. Their behavior is very consistent with the behavior of most men of the Song Dynasty. It is also behavior that is overlooked in other shows. I love how we're seeing this portrayal on the big screen. It's refreshing and quite honestly nice.
The women are the main focus of this show and I feel like that's what many people are not grasping. The women, not the women and their husbands, just them. The Li Family. People complain about Du Yanxi being weak but he's supposed to be weak. How does it make sense that a poor scholar with a disabled mom would be strong physically? He spends most of his time studying.
Again, I do not particularly like the romances in this show nor do I agree with how they portray the women as abusive. I do not support abuse of ANYBODY. I also do not agree with the women having to "tame" men. Men are not children or animals, they should be able to grow by themselves.
However, taking those aspects aside, the romances are quite cute. Again, it's not the best. If I had to rate it right I would give it a 5.5 or a 6. But seeing the men develop as opposed to the female lead being the one having to grow is interesting and nice to see.
Their story doesn't just end with them being married. Chai An's development has been nice to see. Even Fan Lianghan too has grown in some aspects. He's still childish but you can see the difference between him in ep 1 and him in ep 19. He's no longer scared of his wife not because they tamed him but because he saw how much he was hurting her. While I have nothing to say about Du Yanxi now, I can't wait to see how he grows over the course of the show.
