Can anyone help me understand my increased water usage?

My partner and I just moved from a flat (2 bed, 1 bath) to a house (3 bed, 3 bath). It's still just the two of us and our lifestyle is the same.

Just got our first water bill £45/month, claiming we're using 242 litres a day (over 4 months). Google tells me that's not far off the average 2 person household.

But in comparison, we were paying £9/month for 26 litres a day at our flat.

There's two things I can think of:

  1. We had a leaky toilet for approximately 3 weeks last month, so I know that's definitely contributed to extra water usage... but could that really have pushed it to an average of 242 litres a day, across 4 months!?
  2. We were 3 months delayed in setting up our water account (miscommunication between my partner and I), and so had to rely on the water company to figuring out our initial reading (though surely that would have just been the final reading that the previous occupants gave).

I just went through our paperwork and found that the last occupants were apparently using approximately 47 litres a day (but I don't know anything about their lifestyle/usage).

I'm out at the moment, but when I get back I plan to check the meter and try to test for leaks.

Does anyone else have a take on this? Could this likely be down to the leaky toilet, or could we have another issue? Is 26 litres a day at our previous flat implausible, because Google seems to think so.
