Injecting biologic subcutaneously
12M Pediatric patient Height: 139.6 cm Weight: 37.4kg No drugs/drinking/smoking Crohn's, previously on 80mg (x1) humira pen, insurance forced him to 40mg (x2) biosimilar syringe.
I give my son his humira every 2 weeks. After countless denials + delays, what finally shows up for his insurance approved medication (1 week late) is two syringes. It was very unexpected. They send a little 3 step picture on how to inject these and "good luck".
Originally when we got his humira pen, the dr had us do a training session with her nurse. He is already very needle-averse w/everything he's been through and I'm nervous on how to do this. I've looked through many resources but the majority are either the pen or intra muscular. I talked to the pharmacist (Accredo) but they had zero concerns and seemed pretty disconnected. My son is already a full week over his schedule and his dr said we should give it immediately.
I have no training in how to give this shot. It is the weekend and Monday is a holiday. Do you have to push hard? Should you go slow or fast? What if I don't get it in at 45°? Can you go too shallow or too deep? How slowly/quickly should I depress the plunger? I can't believe they just send this stuff out to patients and assume they'll just "figure it out."
Can someone give me some tips or resources? 😭
